ISBE 2022 Bionic Engineering Award Winners

The International Bionic Engineering Award is presented triennially by the ISBE to honour members for their impact research in bionic engineering field. The award evaluation was carried out by the Award Committee based on the Award Measures, and the final results have been approved by the Executive Board of Directors. Here we are delighted to announce the winners of the three categories.

Outstanding Contribution Award:

image.pngMohd Sapuan Salit
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)

Mohd Sapuan Salit is Professor (A grade) of composite materials at UPM. His research interests include natural fibre composites, biopolymer composite packaging, and biocomposites. He is the fellow of Society of Automotive Engineers, Academy of Science Malaysia, Malaysian Scientific Association, etc. He is co-editor-in-chief of Functional Composites and Structures, and member of editorial boards for over two dozen journals. He has produced over 2000 publications including 860 journal papers, 51 books, and 175 chapters in book. He delivered 51 plenary and keynote lectures, and over 161 invited lectures. His current h-index is 94 and with citations of 32,044. Prof. Salit had received Khwarizimi International Award, Kuala Lumpur Royal Rotary Gold Medal Research Award, IET Achievement Award, etc. He was listed among World Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University, USA.

Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA)

Zhendong Dai is Professor at NUAA, devoted to the researches of biological mechanism of animal locomotion, adhesive material and micro-structures, and gecko-inspired robot. He founded the Institute of Bio-inspired Structure and Surface Engineering (IBSS) focused on fundaments of animal locomotion. He also funded the Industrialization Institute of Bionic Technology (IIBT), which focused on the technology transfer. He had responsible for several key projects in NSFC and MOST. Prof. Dai has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers with citation over 4,450 times. His main contributions in the field include the industrialized force sensors of which the 6D sensor was considered the best in the world, the invented equipment used in Chinese Space Station for astronaut training and items fixating, and a hatched robot company for the cleaning of building wall.


Outstanding Youth Award:

University of California San Diego

Sheng Xu is an associate professor at the University of California San Diego. He is interested in developing new materials and fabrication strategies for flexible energy harvesting and health monitoring devices. His research has been presented to the U.S. Congress as a testimony of NIH’s extramural research. He has been recognized by many awards, including MIT Technology Review 35 Innovators Under 35, Wellcome Trust Innovator, Sloan Fellowship, IEEE Sensors Council Technical Achievement Award, SPIE Rising Researchers, NIH Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award, and NIH Trailblazer Award. He is a Kavli Fellow of National Academy of Sciences and a Frontier of Engineering of National Academy of Engineering. He serves Nano Research as a Young Star Editor. Prof. Xu has made important contributions to the field of flexible electronics in recent years.

Xiamen University

Xu Hou is a professor at Xiamen University and the recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Fund. His researches mainly focus on bio-inspired and smart multi-scale pore/channel systems, liquid gating technology, and membrane science and technology. He has published 2 Books and 110 research papers including Nature, Science, Natl. Sci. Rev., PNAS, Nat. Rev. Mater., Nat. Comm., Sci. Adv., Chem. Soc. Rev., J. Am. Chem. Soc., etc. In 2019, he received Young Investigator Award of Colloid and Interface Chemistry, and was selected to represent 100# Fm in Periodic Table of Younger Chemists of IUPAC and 33# As in Periodic Table of Younger Chemists of China. In 2020, he received the National Scientific Innovation and Advancement Award. He also received the Membranes 2021 Young Investigator Award and the XPLORER Prize (2022).


Outstanding Student Award:

Imperial College London

Ming Li is currently a PhD student at Imperial College London funded by the "President's Scholarship" (2019-2023). His current research covers multiple areas related to materials chemistry. As the first author, he has published 6 high-quality papers, including Matter, ACS nano, International Materials Reviews, Materials Horizons, etc. He is the co-founder of a start-up company (Nanjing Hydrogel Technology Co. Ltd) and leads a team committed to the industrialization of cutting-edge research. The work of the team has been widely recognized. In 2019, they won the first prize of the "Beijing University Student Outstanding Entrepreneurship Team" contest, and second prizes in the "The 5th "Internet +" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition" and the "10th "Challenge Cup" Capital College Students' Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition".

Yanlong Shao
Jilin University

Yanlong Shao is currently a Ph. D. candidate at Jilin University. His reseraches mainly focus on the development of bio-inspired micro/nano-structured surface with accurately controllable adhesion and friction behaviors. As the first author, he has published 3 high-quality papers, including Chem. Eng. J. (ESI Highly Cited Paper), Chem. Eng. J. and ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces, and applied 8 invention patents (China). His research achievements had been highly commended in the field. He won the First Prize of the ISBE 2022 Bionic Innovation Competition, and the First Prize of Academic Poster of 2020 International Workshop on Bionic Engineering. He was approved for the Interdisciplinary Research Funding Program for Doctoral Candidates of Jilin University. In 2021, he was selected as the top ten postgraduates “Research Star” of Jilin University.
